Fangs and Lullabies: How This Story Came To Be
by Kallysten

I toyed with the idea of writing a sequel to Baby Steps for a while, to explore the idea of the 'vampire dad', and I had even started throwing down ideas for an outline But the more I thought about it, the more I wished the child would have some special abilities, too. I scraped the idea of a sequel and decided to start from scratch.
Something else I had been thinking about was the return of the demons. They were sealed away in Her Last Words, so what brought them back in the Demons Age series? At the back of my mind, I knew it was through some kind of magic, and I also know how vampires came to be (I need to write that story, one day!). Combine all that with the thought of a vampire fathering a child, and I had my beginning: a magic spell that allows the birth of a half-vampire baby... but that also reopens the 'rips' between our dimension and the demons'.
As I started jotting down ideas, it became clear that the story would not have a traditional plot, with a mission or goal for the heroes to reach. Their 'goal' is to raise a child, and the story developed as snapshots of their lives, some short, some mini-stories within the story, and all with the goal of showing that, as weird as this family is, the love that unites these two vampire dads and their son is the same love shared by countless other parents and children.
The list of anecdotes I wanted to tell was just too long, and I had to pick and choose what would end up in this book to get some sense of unity. The parts that didn't make it in ended up revolving more closely around the spell, the fight against the demons, and the child discovering bit by bit who and what he is. These parts will end up forming a second volume to come in 2012, Demons and Lullabies.
